AREMA AND RUBAU ARE AWARDED THE CONTRACT FOR THE RENOVATION OF THE WWPS AND EXTENSION OF THE WWTP IN ROSES

Last July, the Consorci de la Costa Brava awarded the AREMA – RUBAU joint venture the contract for the renovation of the central pumping station (WWPS) and the extension of the pre-treatment of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Roses.

The purpose of the contract is to modify the central WWPS by getting rid of the screen so that there is no need to remove solid waste, a process which causes so much disruption to the local population and environment. The Roses WWTP receives water from five wastewater pumping stations spread throughout the municipality, including the central WWPS, located on Avda. de Rhode, next to Platja Nova. Currently, the WWPS has two pumping wells, winter (main) and summer (backup). This means that its operation can be modified to adapt to the variability of the flows generated according to the population density at different times of the year. To protect the installed pumps, the WWPS has an automatic cleaning screen that removes solids and directs them to a container. This container therefore has to be emptied periodically, a process which involves opening the street level entrance to the room where the waste container is located. This causes disruption to local residents and pedestrians, especially in summer, due to the space being taken up and the unpleasant odours that permeate the area.

At the end of this summer, coinciding with the fall in the number of people in the municipality, the AREMA – RUBAU joint venture plans to begin the necessary works to modify the purification system. The estimated timeframe for completion is eight months, which will make this the last summer in which the people of Roses have to endure the inconvenience that, until now, has been caused by the municipality’s central WWPS.
