AREMA LAUNCHES THE NEW WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE IN FIGUERES

AREMA, in a joint venture with FCC, has launched the new municipal waste collection service in the town of Figueres, following the formal signing of the contract with the City Council last week.

The contract has a duration of eight years and a total value of €38.76 million, with an annual budget of €4.46 million and a planned investment of €6 million, aimed at the complete renewal of the service. For its start-up and operation, a team of 40 professionals has been brought on board.

The new model will represent a complete overhaul of the current system, after more than 25 years of service and nine extensions of the previous contract. The rollout includes one thousand new containers and around twenty vehicles, which will replace the existing ones. All containers will have five waste fractions and underground systems will be removed, making it possible to introduce organic waste collection in the city for the first time.

The service features a two-sided collection system for household waste, as well as a dedicated door-to-door collection system for businesses using bins, and a separate container system for industrial estates. The two-sided system stands out for its technological component, as it is a fully automated single-operator system, in which collection is carried out solely by the truck driver, improving efficiency, safety and service quality.

As complementary measures, a pilot project for the collection of household cooking oils will be launched, and door-to-door collection for businesses and companies will be rolled out more broadly.

This contract strengthens AREMA’s position as a leading operator in urban services and environmental management, in line with the goals of sustainability, efficiency and the circular economy.
